I never dreamed that a Christmas present my mom bought at the Museum of Modern Art would become such a big hit! Now, it’s popping up all over the Internet:

Some people think it’s a trick. It’s not a trick. What makes it possible is that the original cube is a solid cube, and the two cubes you later see are hollow. It’s cleverly designed so that the star fits exactly inside the cube, and the cube it fits inside of itself turns into a second star. And, of course, the outer cube, when turned into a star, exactly fits inside the inner star when turned into a cube. How’s that for a sentence?

I had one of these in the 80s and wore it out playing with it. I guarantee it didn’t cost $60! I can’t believe MOMA has the market cornered on these.

I have another one still that is not 2 interlocking cubes, but a cube that unfolds into a reversible loop of linked triangles. Its only label is Yoshimoto 1988 KPT Made in Singapore.

    Nice work on the demo!
