And I said, “What about Breakfast at Tiffany’s?”
She said, “I think I remember the film,
And as I recall, I think, we both kinda liked it.”
And I said, “Well, that’s the one thing we’ve got.”
I can’t believe it: one of the greatest choruses in the history of music and it doesn’t even rhyme! I just noticed it. It’s amazing that such a catchy song with a great tune and great lyrics doesn’t even rhyme. I actually think this makes the song even more impressive. They didn’t have to fall back to the tired cliché of rhyming every other line.
Can anybody else think of any other great songs that don’t rhyme?
Another song I really respect is These Are Days by the 10,000 Maniacs. Why? There is no chorus! There are no repeating sections of the song. It’s unbelievable. Also, I just discovered Natalie Merchant is hot! That never hurts.
Anybody else think of other classic songs that defy convention?

Hello. I agree. I enjoy that song, too, and never realized that it didnt rhyme. Its an art all in its own. Its amazing what constitutes art, isnt it? Art appeals on some level of the psyche, but it doesnt need to follow any rules. Some famous artists… it looks like they had anal spraying on a canvas… while they are praised for their crap-work I cant even sell a beautifully elaborate painting that I spend a lot of time on. Simply put, society is superficial… art is appreciated because someone is famous or endorsed by someone famous, not because they are skilled artists. I dont mind downloading music off limewire and have no sympathy for the capitalists who call themselves artists. Unlike Breakfast at Tiffany’s, most of our society adheres to a standard… violating that standard in an attractive way is what I appreciate.
I cant name the song specifically, but I do recall one. Its a R&B song… I dont listen to that genre… but I heard this song once. What struck me about it was that it was made to Not-Rhyme-Deliberately. It could have rhymed. They probably originally wrote it with rhyme. But words were replaced by their synonyms just to make it not rhyme. It was really cool. Because as you listen you could anticipate the words in context, follow the smooth flow of the story… and then be thrown for a loop when the word you were expecting never came, but the meaning was still as you expected.
